Verified Reviewer | Provo, UtahWhat is going on with Walmart/Sam's Club
Hello Kimberly,
I want to start by saying that I used to be a very dedicated Walmart/Sam's Club customer. My recent most recent experience with Sam's Club was with regards to your $8 membership promotion.
I was a member last year but since there are no Sam's club close by where I live, my wife and I agreed we would not renew our membership this year. When I saw the $8 promotion, I figured, "what the heck" and I would go get a new membership for this year too. I figured there would be some restrictions, so I combed Sam's website and found the following,
"* Join as a new Sams Club member for $8 plus applicable taxes. Offer expires June 26, 2022 and may only be redeemed at Sams Club locations; may not be redeemed online.
Limit one (1) special priced membership per person. New [individual] Club memberships only; Plus memberships excluded. Not valid on renewals or with any other offers or discounts. Must be age 18+; membership is subject to qualifications.
Membership cards are non-transferable and are valid at all Sams Club locations nationwide. Walmart and Sams Club associates are not eligible for this offer. Primary memberships are valid for one year from date of issue. Visit SamsClub.com/Privacy to view our privacy policy.
Void where prohibited. Auto-Renew: By accepting this offer, you agree to the terms and authorize annual recurring charges to any card on file for your Sams Club membership fee and any add-on memberships, as well as any applicable taxes at then-current rate for your membership level every year until you cancel. For terms or to turn off auto-renew at any time, visit any club location, call 888-746-**** or sign in to SamsClub.com and go to Auto-renew settings in Your account. Subject to complete terms.
This offer is limited and may be terminated or changed at any time."
I still was a little weary as I noticed the text that said "new Sam's club member", so I tried to call three of the local Sam's club so I could verify if this would exclude me since I had recently expired as a Sam's club member. All three Sam's club basically ignored their phones, so I had no choice but to drive 20 miles to the Provo store and wait 30 minutes in line to be told that I would not be eligible for the $8 offer unless I had not been a member for the last 6 months. In retrospect, it felt like the whole point of this exercise was to try and upsell me on the premium $55 membership since that was how our conversation began. As soon as I told her, no I was not interested in the premium membership as in the past, they have never benefitted me in any way, she noticeably appeared disappointed.
Even after She told me I was not eligible for the $8 deal, she thought she could quickly move me over to the $55 membership again.
My first question is why couldn't you put that text on your website? If that is asking too much, do not make the requirement that a person must drive to the location to be rejected. Have the membership eligibility be verified online so that I don't have to waste my time and gas.
I know you are likely isolated from the management of Walmart but I also know that Sam's is owned by Walmart. My experiences have been particularly disturbing with Walmart as well.
Now when I go to Walmart, I have to take pictures of all the price signs and compare them against what actually pulls up when I ring the item up at the register. Maybe its just an accident, but it seems to happen for about 1 out of every 10 items I go to purchase (especially at the American Fork, Utah store).
Walmart has done an amazing job of throwing me into the arms of Amazon. At least when I purchase something from Amazon, I get charged what they advertise it as.
I realize the primary objective of large corporations is to squeeze as much out of their customer's as possible, but there should at least be the appearance of trying to create a friendly, trustworthy experience.
I am old enough to remember the fall of Sears. All I can say is it looks like Walmart may be at this point in its lifecycle too.
There is no greater way to plot a company's demise then to alienate your customer.
I can't tell you how disappointed I have been with Sam's and Walmart over the last year or so. I hope that Walmart Corp reexamines their practices and tries refocus their operations towards their customer's, especially in these trying economic times.
Warmest Regards,
Nic DellaCioppa
- Good prices
- Lousy customer service
- Lack of locations
Preferred solution: I would like an apology and I would like them to be more honest with their customers in the future. That means listing correct prices and disclosing restrictions openly on website. I would like a complimentary membership for this year as well.
